Non è insolito nell'iconografia egizia: la tavolozza di Narmer è uno di una serie di oggetti portatili riccamente scolpiti datati al periodo formativo della cultura dinastica in Egitto, intorno alla fine del terzo millennio a.C. Molti di questi oggetti sono repliche cerimoniali di oggetti domestici usati da tempo.

La Tavoletta di Narmer è una tavoletta e una lastra votiva e un importante reperto archeologico egizio, datato attorno al XXXI secolo a.C., contenente alcune delle più antiche iscrizioni geroglifiche rinvenute. The Narmer/Mn seal impression shows the Horus name of Narmer in a serekh alternating with the mn and the n signs.46 Some early observers assumed that the seal meant Narmer was Mn (Menes) (Petrie 1923: 6; Newberry 1929: 6-50). Helck (1953: 356-359), on the other hand, proposed that mn is a prince's name and hence that Menes was Narmer's.

The Narmer Palette was discovered in 1898 by James Quibell and Frederick Green. It was found with a collection of other objects that had been used for ceremonial purposes and then ritually buried within the temple at Hierakonpolis. Temple caches of this type are not uncommon. There was a great deal of focus on ritual and votive objects.

The Narmer Palette, also known as the Great Hierakonpolis Palette or the Palette of Narmer, is a significant Egyptian archaeological find, dating from about the 31st century BC, belonging, at least nominally, to the category of cosmetic palettes. It contains some of the earliest hieroglyphic inscriptions ever found.
